Full Plow Call-Out Expected For Weekend Winter Weather Event

NORTHWEST INDIANA -- The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) expects to have a full call-out of plows across its Northwest District as it prepares to battle this weekend's anticipated winter storm.

Forecasters are predicting the system will enter the district from the west Friday night, tapering off by sometime Saturday afternoon with an anticipated 3-6 inches of accumulation possible. A secondary lake effect system is also expected to impact the northwest portion of the district. All this will be followed by frigid temperatures/wind chill factors.

High winds are expected to accompany this event, which can cause significant challenges for motorists. Avoid unnecessary travel. However, if travel is a must, please keep the following in mind:

  • Reduce speeds. Remember, "ice and snow, take it slow." Nobody should be driving interstate speeds in winter weather.
  • Plan plenty of time to reach your destination safely and be patient. Don't put yourself and others in a dangerous situation by being     in a rush.
  • Keep a safe distance. Make sure your vehicle is following at a safe distance to stop. Do not tailgate, especially around snow plows,     and try not to pass.
  • Pay attention. Avoid all distractions and focus only on the task of driving safely. Be aware of your surroundings, drive defensively     and be alert for others who are not driving safely.

Also, remember it's always safest BEHIND the plow.

  • Don't crowd the plow. The front of the plow extends many feet in front of the truck. It may cross the centerline and shoulders while     plowing.
  • Don’t assume the plow driver can see you. A plow driver’s field of vision is very limited — you may see them, but they may not be     able to see you.
  • Don’t tailgate or stop too close behind a plow. Plow trucks are usually releasing salt from the back of the truck. Often, the trucks     stop or take evasive action (to avoid a stranded vehicle or animal). Snow plows create a cloud of snow that reduces visibility. Don’t     travel too closely — leave four to five car-lengths ahead.
  • Use caution to pass. Try not to travel beside a plow for too long — when plowing through a snow drift or packed snow, the impact can     move the plow trucks sideways. If you have to pass a plow, do so on the left side — plows typically move snow to the right as lanes     are cleared. They also turn and exit the road frequently.
  • Snowplows travel slower. Plow trucks travel approximately 30-35 mph when they’re removing snow and ice. Allow plenty of time to stop     or slow down when you’re behind one of our yellow trucks.

INDOT has several tools available for motorists to monitor how the weather is affecting their area. Follow us on social media: facebook.com/INDOTNorthwest or @INDOTNorthwest on Twitter. Also, www.trafficwise.in.gov and indot.carsprogram.org are great traveler resources.

Snow, Plummeting Temps, Strong Winds Bring Challenging Travel Conditions This Weekend

The Illinois Department of Transportation is warning the public that a winter storm arriving this evening will make travel a challenge throughout much of Illinois, with some areas possibly receiving up to 8 inches of snow. Motorists should be prepared for high winds and colder temperatures persisting through the weekend, causing drifting and icing even on treated surfaces.

“The IDOT snow-and-ice teams will be working throughout the weekend making roads as safe as possible,” said Illinois Department of Transportation Deputy Secretary Omer Osman. “The public is advised to plan ahead and ask if their trip is necessary before heading out. Please, if you are driving, slow down, anticipate much longer travel times, increase your distance between other vehicles and exercise caution when sharing the road with our plows.”

Throughout the state, IDOT crews today will be pretreating bridges, overpasses, ramps and other areas susceptible to icing. During the storm, IDOT will have available more than 1,700 trucks and equipment statewide, applying salt and treating roads.

The National Weather Service is forecasting snow to begin this evening across northern and central Illinois, with totals ranging between 2 and 8 inches by Saturday evening. The southern part of the state is expected to see a mix of precipitation with the potential for icing. Gusty winds and low temperatures the remainder of the weekend will create blowing and drifting, reducing visibility to whiteout conditions at times and limiting the effectiveness of salt.

Motorists should expect slick conditions and remain extra cautious at all times.

Tips if you must travel:

  •     Get up-to-date conditions at GettingAroundIllinois.com.
  •     Fill up your gas tank and pack winter weather essentials such as a cellphone charger, warm clothes, blankets, food, water, first-aid kit, washer fluid and an ice scraper.
  •     Check the forecast and make sure someone is aware of your travel route and schedule.
  •     Use extra caution in areas susceptible to ice, including ramps, bridges, curves and shady areas.
  •     Give plows plenty of room and don’t pass unnecessarily. Move over for emergency responders.

Always wear a seat belt. It’s the law and your best protection in the event of a crash.
If you are involved in a crash, remain inside your vehicle. Exiting your vehicle near a busy roadway can have fatal consequences.
Carry a cellphone and dial *999 in the Chicago area for assistance in case of emergency. Reminder: Using handheld phones while driving is illegal in Illinois, unless it is an emergency situation.

As always, for regular updates on statewide road conditions, visit GettingAroundIllinois.com. You can also follow IDOT on Facebook and Twitter

"TRUCKS PARK HERE" - New Truck Parking Availability System
Finding a spot for your big rig is getting a little easier. The Iowa Department of Transportation, in coordination with seven other states, has launched a new data-driven system to help commercial drivers easily locate available truck parking at both state-run rest areas and select private truck stops around the Midwest.

Iowa’s system called “Trucks Park Here” will make commercial drivers aware of available parking along Interstate 80, and portions of I-380, I-35, I-235, and I-29. The data is currently accessible through public data feeds that can be utilized by application developers, in-cab navigation system makers, and others wishing to utilize the parking information. Access to the data feeds can found in the parking information link on www.trucksparkhere.com. Later this month, available parking locations will be added to the rest area layer on Iowa's traveler information sites and mobile apps at www.511ia.org.

“Trucks Park Here” will collect truck parking availability data using a variety of in-pavement and parking lot entrance/exit sensors. Phil Mescher of the Iowa DOT’s Office of Systems Planning led this effort for the state and said, “All eight states have worked to make the data showing available truck parking consistent; however, each is taking a little different approach on where the data is displayed. While some states are using more sign-based approaches like placing information on digital message boards on the roadway, in Iowa we decided to take a more technology-based approach. We are making information available to those who can use the data in existing in-cab systems or develop apps for drivers. In addition, we thought it was important to provide the information on our existing 511 traveler information site that many Iowa drivers are already using.”

This initiative is part of a larger Mid America Association of State Transportation Officials’ truck parking information management system effort being funded in part through a $25 million federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant awarded to eight partnering states – Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. For more information on the project, as well as how to find truck parking information for the other participating states, visit www.trucksparkhere.com.

New Lane Configurations On I-290 Over Salt Creek

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the ongoing bridge replacement of Interstate 290 over Salt Creek, located east of Addison Road in Addison, will require new lane configurations starting, weather permitting, Wednesday, Dec. 26.

The adjustment to the work zone will will take place on eastbound I-290 beginning Dec. 26 and on westbound I-290 after Jan. 1. The new traffic pattern will allow for construction of a median crossover, followed by removal and construction of bridges over Salt Creek. Lanes and shoulders in the work zone will be narrowed during construction.

The project is expected to be complete by October.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Traffic Pattern to Change on I-65 in Lake County as Part of Bridge Project

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is announcing a new traffic configuration on I-65 in Lake County between I-94 and US-12/20 as part of a bridge deck replacement project.

The southbound bridge over Central Avenue and the CSX Railroad tracks is being replaced in a project that started earlier this year. On or after Tuesday, Nov. 27, the traffic pattern in that area will change.

Northbound I-65 will go back to being two lanes heading northbound, with no southbound traffic flowing on I-65 through that corridor. Because of this change, the exit ramps connecting the I-80/90 Indiana Toll Road and 15th Avenue to southbound I-65 will be closed.

This configuration is expected to remain in place until summer 2019.

Detours for these closed ramps are as follows: From the Toll Road, motorists will take Exit 21 to westbound I-94 to connect to southbound I-65; From 15th Avenue, motorists will detour west on 15th  Avenue, east on Central Avenue and west on I-94 to southbound I-65.
